Southwest's costly little lesson
Southwest Flight 2022 from San Jose was already nearly 2 hours late when it landed about 1:50 this morning. But what further delayed its 6 passengers who’d checked luggage is a costly lesson in listening to customers.
Many travelers are aware early or late arrivals can mean delays at the baggage carousels. But something seemed awry at Sky Harbor’s Carousel 6, Terminal 4.
A half hour had passed since the sleepy fliers, joined by those there to greet them, had made their ways down the long escalator from Gate C8.
The carousel sign still said “awaiting bags.” One weary traveler went in to ...

Quip leads to confusion over foundation
Reporter Kate Nolan is reporting on the aftermath of groups vying using Scottsdale’s former Civic Center Senior Center:
“Phones rang Thursday at the offices of The Foundation for Senior Living in Phoenix after a wisecrack from its chief executive was quoted in a Scottsdale Republic story about a Scottsdale public building the group is proposing to use as an adult day care center.
“The group is applying to occupy a former senior center for seven years or more.
“Clients and board members were flummoxed that Guy Mikkelsen quipped, “That's fine. Given what's been going on at the state (budget talks), who's to ...

The ad Cox didn’t want you to see
The Cox ad online demanded my attention.
It offered ABC prime time shows free, "On Demand," anytime I demanded to see them on my Cox digital cable service. Shows like “Ugly Betty,” “Grey’s Anatomy” or “Desperate Housewives” would now be available (and we're not talking DVRs or VCRs here, just click the remote and they'll send you the show).
How exciting, in a cable-TV-service sort of way.
Cox’s Valley of the Sun cable, with about 2.5 million customers, was catching up to what Cox already offers in San Diego, or what Comcast offers in places like Lodi, Calif., so if you’re ever stuck in ...

Check out who's checking out Basha's
You may have trouble finding a coveted covered parking place at the Basha’s at Hayden and Indian School roads Tuesday afternoon.
If the checkout lines seem just a tad slow, be patient, cautions reporter Jane Larson.
Special guests are scheduled to visit – and it’s supposed to be for your own good.
Here’s the official word from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:

Dog parade passes us by
Scottsdale likes to be listed for many good things. It helps make the place special to those of us who live here and to those who visit.
But lately, we’ve been losing ground with dog lovers.
Oh, we’ve got the recently remade Chaparral Park off-leash area.
But last spring, what dog park came out tops in America? Gilbert’s Cosmo Dog Park, according to DogFancy magazine. Chaparral Park’s 4-acre off-leash area didn’t even get an honorable mention.
Well, we figured, we’ve still got our share of upscale pooch-pampering places we recently printed, especially Mackie’s Parlour in Hilton Village, which has attracted celeb pet owners from ...

Family insights from the next generation
Many of us Arizonans come here from many other places and in our daily lives we just don’t stay intertwined with extended families Back East, the Midwest, or Wherever. You may catch up at lifecycle events such as weddings, funerals, bar/bat mitzvahs, quinceañeras.
Maybe you left when you were someone’s grandchild, niece or nephew. Years pass and suddenly you and your cousins are the next generation’s grandparents, aunts and uncles.
I got an insight into how my family is getting along when my next generation cousin, Alicia Cleveland, 16, of South Windsor, Conn., talked at the funeral Sunday for her grandfather, Donald Ginsberg, who passed away ...

OK, Scottsdale, all eyes on us

Scottsdale will be in the state’s focus when The League of Arizona Cities and Towns holds its 2007 conference in our fair city Aug. 28-31.
That means public officials from around the state will call the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess home for a few days while they ponder municipal issues connected with the theme “Today’s Choices: Tomorrow’s Reality."
Some of the agenda items:

Golf tournament at the TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course (where crews are diligently, we hope, replacing sod – better hurry.)

Welcome reception, hors d’oeuvres ...

Crossing a milestone of sorts
We’re a little bigger.
There are more of us in Scottsdale, that is.
The city’s 2nd quarter 2007 growth profile says the Scottsdale’s population reached 240,410, up 780 from the 1st quarter, or 1,510 from the same quarter last year.
We are spread out into 80,790 single-family homes and 37,805 multi-family dwellings.
That’s up 530 and 190, respectively, from a year ago.
The annual growth rate of just over 1% in population and numbers of houses in the 2nd quarter this year was just about the same as last year.
Most of the new homes completed in the last quarter are in north and far north ...
